THE NAME

“I named my wine range ‘Rusty Mutt‘ because I was born in the Year of the Metal Dog in Chinese astrology. I then ‘Australianised’ Metal Dog to Rusty Mutt.”

“The first wine I produced under the Rusty Mutt label was a Shiraz, which I named it the ‘Original‘.” – Scott Heidrich (Owner / Winemaker)

WINE REVIEW

93 points – Sam Kim (Wine Orbit)
“Upfront and immediately appealing, the wine shows blackberry, rich floral, warm spice, and roasted hazelnut aromas on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent weight and succulent fruit intensity, splendidly framed by supple texture and finely pitched tannins, making it flavoursome and fabulously drinkable.”

92 points – Steve Leszczynski (QWine Reviews)
“It opens with cool mint and dark chocolate but the former moves on the longer it sits. Blackberries along with some blackcurrants, this is a muscular, brutish style but its edges are softened and more rounded on the second day of tasting. An age-worthy wine, broad cocoa like tannins are draped across the palate on a persistent and elongated finish.”

Description
McLaren Vale at its best.

Shiraz

The combination of differing geology, soil and micro climates in the McLaren Vale region promotes a rich diversity in fruit. Proximity to the ocean brings cool nights during the summer which is critical for slower ripening and retaining acidity in the wine. At Rusty Mutt, I select parcels of fruit from different areas to bring complexity to my wines. This also allows me to select the right style of Shiraz for blending with the Grenache in the Rocky Ox GSM while maintaining the richness I'm looking for in the Original Shiraz.

TASTING NOTES

“The aroma leads with a sweet oak lactone with a hint of vanilla, perfectly supplementing the black cherry and mulberry notes. Time in the glass reveals licorice and fruit infused dark chocolate. There’s a real intensity on the palate. Distinctive dark cherry flavours with a chocolate element are evident initially, then spice, dried herbs and aged savoury meats are revealed. Grippy oak tannins provide a very ample structure which finishes fine and strong.”
