Description
The most renowned variety in McLaren Vale.

Shiraz

Shiraz is with out a doubt, the most important grape variety grown in Australia. Penfolds, and many other reputable producers, have done a great job of elevating this variety to the very pinnacle of quality and desire. The flavours, aromas and textures of Shiraz are hard to beat. It has broad appeal to many consumers, even from many Australian regions producing a spectrum of styles. McLaren Vale produces very well balanced and structured wines with ripe dark fruit flavours, chocolate and pepper and spice savoury characters. The Rusty Mutt Original Shiraz is no exception. Careful selection of vineyard sites allows us to produce a deeply flavoured and smoothly textured wine filled with chocolate, red berries and herb and spice notes.

Critic Reviews

Five vineyards in five districts, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, 8 days on skins, 30 months in 60% American/40% French oak (12% new). A regional dark chocolate coating to the blackberry and plum fruit, the tannins where they should be.91 POINTS James Halliday 2021 Wine Companion

It’s sweetly fruited and fabulously expressed on the nose showing blackberry, sweet cherry, warm spice and cedar characters. The palate is equally gratifying with excellent weight and plush mouthfeel wonderfully complemented by silky texture and rounded tannins, making it hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2028. “A powerful old school style Shiraz with the oak dominating the attractive varietal fruit characters. Nice dusty tannins.” 4 STARS Winestate Magazine

"This is a bigger wine. However, the vibrant acidity brightens up the blackberry and black cherry fruit. There is some Shiraz sweetness on the mid-palate in this medium- to full-bodied wine. I enjoyed the refreshing finish." 93 POINTS Thomas Girgensohn

"Superb purple colour, subtle complex bouquet with a dash of dried herbs in it, Uber tasty palate with layers of flavour, great depth, silky smooth with a splash of vanillin oak- BLOODY GORGEOUS!!" Dan Traucki 11/19
